A Worker-Centered Design Approach for Flexible Production

Abstract: This paper proposes a modular ventilation system for abrasive processing tasks in dynamic industrial environments. The system uses standard components, slotted hoods, flexible ducts, and mobile filter units, which can be repositioned based on the task location. Each unit operates independently or as part of a shared duct system. The concept is designed to respond to task variability common in Industry 5.0 and avoid complex automation. The airflow and pressure calculations follow standard ventilation equations and require no simulation software. The system supports rapid deployment and user-level control without requiring infrastructure redesign. Two implementation scenarios are described: a small workshop with standalone units and a mid-sized facility with a ducted network. The comparison with traditional systems highlights the gains in flexibility, energy use, and task alignment. The proposed framework supports human-centered design, making it suitable for small and medium enterprises that require dust control but do not have centralized automation.
