Bipolar Neutrosophic Set-DEMATEL and Its Application to Criteria of Sustainable Urban Transport

Abstract: The Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) is a widely used decision-making method that employs arithmetic operations and inverse matrices to establish causal relationships among criteria. Previous studies have explored its integration with various indeterminacy-based sets to address multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems characterized by truth, indeterminacy, and falsity information. Unlike single-valued neutrosophic DEMATEL, which directly utilizes three-tuple memberships, this study introduces the bipolar neutrosophic DEMATEL approach. By incorporating positive and negative memberships for truth, indeterminacy, and falsity, the proposed method enhances decision-making in sustainable urban transport. This study applies the bipolar neutrosophic DEMATEL method to assess twelve key criteria influencing sustainable urban transport. A panel of four experts provided evaluations using a bipolar neutrosophic linguistic variable representing "influence." The proposed approach generates three key outputs: causal and effect criteria classifications and a network relation map. The computational results indicate that six criteria belong to the causal group, while the remaining six fall into the effect group. Moreover, the network relation map identifies ‘accident severity’ (C5) as the most influential criterion in sustainable urban transport. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers in urban transport planning and management.
