Approaches to the Systematization of the Harbours along the Bulgarian Coast

Abstract: Archaeological studies of coastal sites along the Western Black Sea Coast, which are tied to the port system and the connection to maritime trade, have been conducted for more than a century. However, despite detailed historical analysis together with intensive archaeological investigation in the last decades, there are still no comprehensive studies like those for the Mediterranean. All this suggests that the introduction of new methods in archaeological research on the paleogeographic development of the coastline in connection with the construction of port infrastructures and other facilities during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages will provide new, significant data on the overall system of coastal life in the context of maritime trade.
