Abstract: This article briefly covers the main pitfalls and guidelines for novice researchers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The intention is to raise awareness around the existing issues in research to aid in identifying them when conducting a literature survey. While AI offers various benefits, overlooking ethical guidelines and functionality results in major consequences after launching the system. Since publications serve as a reference point for researchers, building on correct techniques allows proper methodology, decreasing the overall chances of unknowingly making major mistakes. The impact of data leakages on the performance of AI systems in the health care domain is further highlighted through a case study of AI for breast cancer detection.
