Chromatic Feedback Systems in Smart Meters: A Review of Methodological Approaches and Behavioral Impact

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to assess different types of chromatic feedback strategies that have been adopted by smart meter technology, especially regarding the technical perspective and their effects on household electricity consumption. In this regard, chromatic feedback involves the use of colors as a way of delivering information about energy consumption in real-time and has been widely used in DR programs. This paper provides a critical evaluation of the literature on various kinds of feedback systems, including numerical, auditory, appliance-specific, and social-norm-based systems. According to scientific research, the use of chromatic and ambient feedback may allow for energy savings of up to 5% - 20%, while peak power savings may exceed 40%. Yet, the sustainability of these systems often suffers from the effects of reduced novelty, heterogeneity in methods used, and lack of standardization of design parameters. In addition, this review emphasizes the superiority of multimodal and personalized feedback techniques over single-mode feedback. Through a critical evaluation of the methods used in evaluating such systems and their designs, it becomes clear that there are still several areas for future research in this field. These areas include the development of standardized color schemes for eco-feedback designs, longitudinal studies, and comparisons between different modes of feedback.
